In our Registration guidelines we write that “Foreign visitors are prioritized”. When opening the first Creators Inn by Elvine outside of our hometown of Gothenburg, we decided to change that to “Foreign visitors and creators from Gothenburg are prioritized” in order to support our local talents visiting the capital.
Fredrik Nyberg is one of those locals who got a chance to stay at Creators Inn by Elvine at Hotel Scandic Malmen in Stockholm. Even though he currently lives in Berlin he manages to produce one of the best clubs in Gothenburg. Read about that and his reason for visiting Stockholm below.
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Fredrik Nyberg working as label manager for Trunkfunk Records, based in Berlin for almost two years. I’m also Dj Nibc playing records at The Eye in Gothenburg and at various places around the globe. I’m also producing music under the names Dj Nibc, Stuffa (together with Jonas Rathsman) and Tyken (together with Carl Rydén).
Do you consider yourself creative and if so, in what way?
I’d like to think so, since a lot of my work allows me to be creative. Besides the obvious parts, which is closely connected to my music in my studio and performing in clubs, I have also developed a creative platform through my record label.
If you don’t know the background or concept to our graphic profile you might find it a bit confusing compared to a lot of other dance labels where you usually spot the label straight away by a very logical design strategy with similar logo placements, fonts etc. Every vinyl release from Trunkfunk always looks different.
I’m not only A&R for the music, I also select exclusive designers and artists for every release from a spectrum of different scenes, from graffiti and street artists like Finsta , Daniel Chastinet and PMKFA (also a previous guest at Creators Inn) to designers and artists like Maria Kask, 25ah and Conny Karlsson. They all get free hands with everything. From choosing the vinyl colour to font and layout on the sleeve. We have a lot of different nice colour vinyl and picture discs now in our catalogue. Always very limited and sometimes numbered by hand.
I think this design concept matches Trunkfunk’s music very well, which is also very versatile from an A&R point of view. From cheeky, innovative dance tunes with a cross-over appeal to deep underground bonkers with loads of powerful remixtools that also makes it hard to put Trunkfunk in a catagory.
What was your reason for visiting Stockholm, and what happened while you were here?
I was in Stockholm to dj at Fredsgatan 12 where we celebrated a music release, which I’ve remixed, called “A play of nonsense” by Uniforms For The Dedicated and I also had a Trunkfunk soundsystem at the Grolsch Block Party the day after. It was loads of fun, and I do miss the Swedish summers sometime so I’m always happy to go to Sweden when it’s not raining or snowing.
How did you like the room, and what do you think about the Creators Inn by Elvine concept?
It was great! I’ve heard about the concept through my friends from Tennishero and I wish every hotel room had a proper vinyl player where I could check my new promos before a gig.
Any tips and recommendations for future guests? Did you include anything on the map?
I didn’t include anything on the map. I did however leave some really nice Trunkfunk vinyl for future guests to enjoy!
What’s creativity to you?
A lot about thinking out of the box but still knowing what works and then combining the two. Then it’s just a part of balancing, which might be easier said than done!
What’s next? / Anything else you want to add?
Just got back to Berlin and have loads of new Trunkfunk releases to finish and a lot of music to do. So I’m actually glad the hectic summer is over so I can lock myself in the studio for a couple of weeks. Keep your eyes and ears open and I hope you like our funk from the trunk!
